Joya Paul

Biography

Joya Paul is a mixed media artist and is primarily self-taught with formal training in encaustic which she has explored over the last three years. Joya's latest work combines photographic imagery, collage, oil paints, pastels and encaustic to create haunting landscapes and dream like imagery.

The encaustic paint is applied over the photographic image, creating texture, depth and transforms the image to give it an ethereal and luminous quality. Joya's work has been displayed in many private collections throughout North America.

Statement

Encaustic is the ancient art form of painting with molten wax and pigments. The colours and patterns for each painting unfold in unique, dramatic and often serendipitous ways that are often hidden from the artist until the layers of wax are scraped away and revealed. I am drawn to encaustic for its many surprises and when I paint, I am immersed in the meditative process of creation. Art transports me to a serene place where I contemplate our world, and the beauties and textures woven into so many aspects of it. My mixed-media paintings are expressions of what I observe.
