Laurie Wonfor Nolan

Biography

Cambridge based painter Laurie Wonfor Nolan exhibits a new series of paintings at Arts on Queen 2198 Queen St. East. (Queen & Balsam in the Beach). Laurie&s acrylic paintings have an immediate and honest approach to them, with vibrant colours and loose brush strokes. Her landscape and still life studies are part of her many collections working directly from observation and are painted 'in the moment'.

Statement

When I make a painting the subject has to feel comfortable and familiar to me. When I paint a new landscape there is always a little bit of wandering around and 'getting to know you' at first. Then I feel I can choose angles that are more real, more personal and less like a postcard. The actual painting process happens really quickly so I don't lose the life of the place. I want the viewer to feel like they were there too, just happening on this unexpected scene and maybe wanting to hang out for a while.

With still life it's similar. The objects don't need to go together in a traditional way. In fact, I work to counter that. They just need to be things I like having around me, things that have been loved, things that are too wonderful to throw away. Familiar human clutter arranged in unexpected ways...but not too arranged!
